Jesus said in Luke 13:5
"I tell you,no;but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."
From this we see that repentance is a precondition for salvation. At the time of salvation, the Holy Spirit was doing something special in our hearts. He was showing us the wrongfulness of our sinful lives. He was also producing a grieving in our hearts (or Spirit) that sin had separated us from God.
John 16:8
"And when He has come,He will covict the world of sin,and of righteousness, and of judgement."
2 Cor 7:10
"Godly sorro brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorro brings death."
We can see from this that repentance is not just feeling guilty about our sins, nor it is just being sory because of the consequences of our sins. True repentance is being truly sorry towards God about your sins. It also means a hating of sin and a decision to turn away from sin. At the time of salvation, the Holy Spirit brought that repentance which allowed us to be saved by the grace of God.
However how many have found out this does not mean we were immediately able to stop sinning and therefore have never sinned again? We might not want to sin. It might not be our desire to sin. However our fleshly lusts' seems to pull us to the sinful ways we had before we were saved. Does this mean we didn't repent and are therefore not properly saved?
No. It does not. Don't let the devil deceive you with this lie. It is one of the tricks he uses to try and get people to give up their salvation. The truth is:-
a. There is repentance at the time of salvation, which is the decision we made to take ourselves off the throne of our lives and place God on the throne.
However this is not the end of repentance.
b. Repentance is also an ongoing exprience in our Christian lives. It is a turning
experience, as we recognise and renounce aspects of our old sinful way of life and
choose, more and more,to live the kind of life God wants us to live
Amen and Amen
